Isobel & Us
ISOBEL
'Isobel' is a 1972 Volkswagen Westfalia Type 2b (T2b) Crossover Bay Transporter/Kombi/Microbus. Informally it was referred to as a a "Bulli" in Germany, a "Volkswagen Station Wagon" or "Bus" in the United States, and a "Camper" here in the United Kingdom.

Volkswagen evolved the Type 2 design with a new-generation model in 1967, though it retained largely similar rear-engined, cab-over underpinnings as the first-generation model. The new model was larger, heavier, and featured more square-set styling to the Type 1 leading to its nickname “Breadloaf”, while the large one-piece front windscreen on some models saw them referred to as “Bay Window” Kombis. Large upgrades were made to the rear suspension, removing the Beetle-based swing axle in favour of a modern system using CV joints to radically improve handling safety. The electrical system was also upgraded from the pre-War-era 6-volt of the first-generation to a modern 12-volt circuitry. Second-generation Kombis became iconic vehicles for surfers and holiday makers looking for a roomy vehicle that was cheap to run and ferociously reliable. This interest drove a cottage industry which saw many second-generation Kombis converted into camper-vans by aftermarket companies.

'Isobel' was made in West Germany, exported to the U.S. and then imported to the U.K. from West Virginia and lovingly restored here by its previous owner for use as a wedding transporter. She is named after Linette's mum, Isobel Penney, who sadly passed in December 2024. Isobel used to love going on adventures with her husband Philip in their own V.W. camper in the 1980's and 90's and 'Isobel' is named to preserve their memory.
